Reviews:

starsGREAT PRODUCT FOR THOSE USING MD
The M-AUDIO passage USB device is probably one of the best things, at which at all at happen, still the Minidisc recorder, including me, to avoid when trying, the temptation which use to buy iPod or the Zune. With this device I am able ge$$$WESEN to make accessible and of note I-been correct, Windows central player and real player off. Although I "in the real time" in the comparison also fast burn or "drag and fall" note must, it is still nice to make accessible in a the position zuSEIN, more than a certain source for my Minidisc recorder with that passage USB. I can understand the fact that all possible notes, concerning which the occasional "bangs is formed" during the admission and the Playbacks it sounds. Sometimes for me this arose, when I used Windows.xp. Since at that time have I the beta driver for Windows Vista into my new computer downloadet, which is equipped with the Windows Vista software, and no the mentioned problem again arose. I permit that, loading up the software and the MAudiovorrichtung having, which are assembled into my computers not when 1-2-3 is so simple. As I wish, was she; I became actual over a lining of the computer tax, particularly with the audio device and much more up learn play-your-desk-cut off finished. All in all, this is a large individual part, as soon as you let the output attitude square away; and again, this of the best products for those, which have Minidisc recorder in the special one or recorder non iPod of the multiplicity generally.

starsHigh Quality Soundcard
Instead of inserted laptop soundcard used the passage, in order to make available high quality audio for unprofessional digital radio modes. Simple plug 'n play installation. Use two with desk calculator, in order to attach to the repeated radios. Windows.xp works comfortably with repeated passages. Completely troublefree use and achievement - a joy after the Stolpern as well as low quality laptop soundcard!

starsGreat sound for CD, MP3 playback.
I have used the Transit for the past two years with 3 different notebooks (Dell, Gateway, Mac Book Pro) and numerous desktops. Granted, the driver can be a pain to install, and does not work at all in Vista (see below), but once it's working, it has proven stable for my use. I use it solely for audio playback through home stereo systems and also with an ElectroVoice PA system. I have not tried it for recording (I have other M-Audio gear for that). The sound that comes out of this little device is amazing - very dynamic and clear - and similar to other M-Audio cards. I used it at an outdoor party last summer with my EV PA system and received several favorable comments like, that sounds like it's a "live" performance. I like the Transit so much that I am ordering another one. The one caveat I have is that I have not been able to get it to work with Windows Vista (blue screen of death and no audio output on an HP notebook). This driver is still in beta and has been for the past 6 months (come on M-Audio). So, save yourself the headache if you are running Vista. But if you have XP or a Mac, and you want a big upgrade in quality from your internal sound card, I highly reccomend this for playback of MP3s and CDs. Note: it does not drive headphones directly without an external amp.

starsGreat for Listening. But thats all
Well for mixing on the road however you do not try admission by it. Quality is low and wins a clicking and bangs, which are if them the entrance continuous, used. But the good exit finally falls through in addition. _ it be life expectancy be good under one year (and thats if material good Obacht the u take of it).

starsUnstable
Typically of USB attaches, the passage is rather simply unstable. She loads your audio at best with withdrawals to work to worst it finished, together until it is reset. I tried this interface on two different systems, of, which let a MAudiofeuerwarndraht 410 and Maudiofeuerwarndrahtsolo run perfectly. If you do not waste your time with the passage, or each possible other USB interface, firewire goes.

starsIt is for mobile recording mainly ... not for home listening mostly..
Hi I am DJ and I record a lotta, single vinyls, mixes, from tapes or CDs to my computer or laptop. This piece of USB soundcard is one of the smallest solutions and there is ASIO and the AD/DA chip is same as in other similar M-Audio devices. So in fact resolution/capability are almost the same across the same "chipset". There is fact, that with low latency and monitor back there are sometimes issues with hearing, but record is not touched by those at all. Of course if you use same USB for storing your USB Hub get overloaded and start swap and share the bandwith. Easy to use. Easy to operate with. Easy to install. I use it for almost three years. Still working well. So finally if you need something for "field" recording it is an option. Of course if you have firewire, there is no discussion about the choice, FW is always better. There is also Terratec Producer company's sound cards (USB/FW) like PHASE22/PHASE26 so you can check those also.

starsNG for me
2. Attempt @ USB audio adapter for my eMachines 5312 laptop and this is not for me also not. Loose breakdown thrusts, Stutters, any kind synchronization of the loss, resulting in horrid the noises. Even if it functions, the driver does not offer to line in that line out on passthru (confirms with Techunterstuetzung after some circulation). Mac desired ProTools user seems. Zusammengerollt with that spiffy spiffy-Schauen however in high of degrees crippled electronic music creation program - full version is expensive. There another USB sound device (creative SELF-SERVICE) on this laptop could work was not also not satisfying on another PC better. Instead PC map went sound map (SELF-SERVICE Audigy) to nearly the same price, which worked flawlessly. YMMV.

starsWorks after a bit of fiddling
I'm using this to get audio out of a Mac Mini, which I'm using to stream DVD content. Working from an online tip, I selected "internal speakers" from the sound control panel, and then the transit from within apple's DVDPlayer, and everything is fine. This is contrary to the instructions that came w/ it.

Sound is choppy w/ VLC, but I haven't investigated yet.

This is w/ a PPC mini, 10.4.9.

starsM-Audio Feedback
This product was returned, since it did not fulfill my needs. The expenditure lay at the very bad audio quality, as, back music to my main theatre system easily. I have price, which works on large since bought simular a product of another salesman for half.

starsBetter off with something else that actually works
This is the entry-level for getting a digital audio stream from your Mac to an external DAC.

Unfortunately, it just didn't work for me, due to abolutely terrible drivers. I tried the native driver intall as posted, but I still experienced numerous freezes and crashes on my iBook. I also heard buzzing whenever the hard drive was reading or writing data. Oh, and playing audio seemed to really tax the CPU, to the point where the iBook was practically unuseable for anything else.

I switched to an Airport Express and couldn't be happier. No problems with sound quality, no freezes or crashes, and there's no noticeable load on the CPU.

starsGreat audio quality but a few usability issues
The audio quality of these USB sound map is large. However the entrance and the exit steckfassungen are very confusing marked, and I must use attempt and disturbance above each hook of the time I it. Also the drivers accomplish flawlessly, but the installation is not at all automated -- you must hunt CD on that around, in order to find the right documents for your operating system.

starsMac Mini users beware
I tried everything, in order to receive this waste of the space enterprise. It is today sent back. It seems that the driver for 10.4.2 is not usable. They can try to use those, native Mactreiber through after these instructions, but they did not work for me: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20040514125451790

starsDoesn't work as advertised (for Mac users)
Review relevant noly to Macintosh users:

1. Sound output from Transit cuts out frequently, unpredictably, and often irrecoverably. Imagine listening to music and then using the keyboard to adjust the volume and suddenly having the audio disappear. Imagine listening to iTunes and then deciding to switch to a streaming audio program through your browser or through RealPlayer and having no sound in the new application. This happens frequently with the Transit. And about half the time it cannot be corrected by plugging and unplugging the Transit: you have to log out and in or restart. Lovely.

2. Other USB audio I/O devices such as the Griffin iMic simply work without drivers on a Macintosh. The Transit is not visible to the system without its drivers installed, so you're stuck with whatever M-Audio wants to provide. This is probably necessary to provide digital output and some device configuration, but it's a real problem if the drivers are inadequate (as they are).

3. The M-Audio site lists the current driver (1.6.1) as compatible with the current operating system (10.4.2). This isn't true at all. The current driver is dysfunctional with the current operating system.

4. My iMic and my Logitech USB headphones are working fine on my computer, so there's nothing wrong with the hardware.

5. M-audio has yet to respond to my e-mail requesting help, and they don't provide a toll free number for tech support.

Avoid this paperweight and get something that works as advertised. They've had months to come up with a driver that works with the current operating system and have failed. Unfortunately they haven't bothered to be honest about that and are still selling these as Mac compatible (and as compatible with the current Mac OS).

starsTerrific sound but not for novices
It's small, requires no power cord, has no buttons, and has a 104dB s/n ratio and almost no harmonic distortion -- yes! The moment I installed this on my Dell Latitude D600, I could hear a marked improvement in bass clarity and overall imaging.

Now the drawbacks: The software is not so hot. You cannot adjust its output and there is no equalizer. Plus I had a huge driver issue and tech support had no idea how to solve it. I had to do three hours of serious technical detective work (Windows driver version numbers, service packs, system files, etc.) to fix it. (Turn out it was an issue was with XP's USB drivers... surprise!)

Furthermore, it cannot monitor its own line-in. Thus you cannot use the line-in jack to, say, play another audio source through your speakers.

Still, the simplicity of the device and its sound quality won me over. Recommended.

starsTranist USB small device, big results
Helped the passage USB me to obtain the goal of receiving the digital pastrhough from mine powerbook to more reciever. The deivce settles a large work of leading of DTS and of of Dolbysignalen directly by the optical gate. Tricky the part sets up the device, the manual lacked within many ranges. Also instead of you use the drivers, which dispatch device with the Download the newest of Maudio. The driver, which with my dispatched, was over an a yearly and not completely supported OS X 10.3.7. Also the manual can mention that the passage USB device do not possess it attitudes icon under OS X, instead of adjust the device by the "clay/tone" manufactures, or "audio MIDI" tax linings, the "passage" tax lining use you. The sound quality was entire largely, very clearly, no added Static and the digital run through large worked on. Foget the straight Apple DVD player does not change "to the digital result" "from the system clay/tone" to use the DTS and the Dolbysignale. Entirely a large device to permit to the digital audio exit from a Mac to

starsDriver problems
I bought this unit, in order to replace first a production Xitel unit. Hauptproblem, which I have with the MAudiokasten, is the fact that, if iBook is again-begun the equipment operation does not represent above. The USB cable must separate and attach, in order to receive it, in order to represent above. I should have bought the improved Xitel instead of Hifi PROM ASS ASS (with a full set of cables comes). This unit comes not with a fiber optics cable, the Xitel unit and is approximately same price.

starsTransit: Proceed with Caution
Bought an M-Audio Transit to replace a Griffin iMic, whose sound quality was not acceptable, on a Macintosh G4 titanium PowerBook 667 MHz (1 GB RAM, OS 9.2.2 and 10.3.4).

Transit hardware: Excellent. Meets its wonderful specs.
M-Audio Mac OS 9 driver software: Garbaggio. Totally non-functional and not very stable.
M-Audio Mac OS X driver software: Works for us, not for others.

The Mac OS 9 software is unusable junk: neither the input level controls nor level meters of most software will operate with the Transit, though the same software works fine with the (inferior, audio-wise) Griffin iMic, and Apple built-in hardware on other Mac models. Software which will not work with the Transit and its current drivers (we tried both 1.5.4 and 1.5.1) include: Coaster 1.1.3, Amadeus II 3.7.2, Sound Studio 2.0.7, and the OS 9.2.2 Sound control panel. All these are standard Sound Manager-compliant software packages that work stably and well with everything except the Transit. Only the output of the Transit seems to work under OS 9.

During the week of troubleshooting and emailing, M-Audio support recommended using software which supports ASIO drivers, avoiding the Apple Sound Manager. They recommended BIAS Peak LE. We tried the demo of Peak LE 3.2, which was so wildly unstable that we were unable to perform meaningful tests.

We had acceptable results with OSeX Panther 10.3.4, though other OSeX users have not (details on xlr8yourmac.com). Proceed with caution, and make sure you can return the Transit if you cannot make it workable on your system.

Wishing everyone trouble-free audio input and output,

))Sonic(( (and unnamed friend)

starsBest Solution
Everyone who wants digital audio on his Macintosh is best served with this device. I tried a lot of solutions when I wrote an article about audio devices for DVD playback for Macworld Germany, and Transit is definitely the best of them, specially if someone wants to connect his Mac (PowerBook, iMac, everything with USB ports) with an amplifier that has optical digital input. I use transit now for month and so far had never problems on my Flatpanel iMac.
