Just want to say the item was a gift for my daughter, she is getting ready for college. She is going for grafics designer. She had to borrow her teachers for her math and when she got this one, was very excited. Her teacher had the TI-83 and was very impressed she had a more advanced one then him. It's a great calc with many features. Also the best price I could find.


Horrible calculator, the designers should be ashamed!
I have taken this calculating to an algebra, geometry, a trigliceride, complete statistics and a test of calculation. The calculating has been programmed in order to render hard the duties much common a lot to make in a fast method. As an example, when tried to calculate the cosine of an angle, you must "then" press "the cosine of second function." Us it is not a dedicated key fast of cosine. After, in some way during the test one changed function of the menu. When I write "cos to machine (20)," the calculating spits behind "cos(20)", than is not useful! I know, I know, been thinking that my regulations of way are in radiating rather than the degrees, but that one is not the case. In spite of I consult of the handbook of the 312 pages, still I do not know to make the calculating to find the cosine of 20 degrees! Defective anchor, during my test the calculating has not been able to divide 5/32 to me for! Spit behind "5/32", than moreover was not useful. Of new, us it is not a simple change of the menu that it seems to correct the situation. The long division By hand on the test is concluded me on making! The calculating moreover test to take it to the screen "of the center", that it is moreover a time waste less that you wish to have the option of regulation of the clock several times during the day. Once that you are "demoted" to the screen "of the center", then you must release over the image of the calculating in order to go of new to a screen that allows that facades the calculations! Best Calculator out there for High Shcool
I bought it and so far its been the best calculator you can use in high school. I find it handy in math B2 and B3 to I guess to have an upper hand, but its not cheating, cause its legal, but I feel I have an advantage over the other kids since they cant do stuff like solve quadratic equations, expand powers, and use x and anyother variable to actually equal that variable, so x wactually equals x unlike my older calculator the TI-83 Silver Edition. Also thers a load of programs you can download for other classes, I prefer the chemestry application which comes in habd y in AP Chemestry.
In all if your loking for a great calculator and gain an advantage over others, without cheating, get this calculator, it also makes a great present, though I rather get something else, like a video game.


Ti-89 84 Silver or other?
Hi there.

I owned both Ti89 and Ti84 Silver so I am trying to comment about these 2 as fair as possible.

Ti-84 is pretty good I believe. You can plot data tables and find best-fit curves, lines... to predict the trend. Further more, the built-in SOLVE is very powerful, it solve almost any equations. But the cons is it only give u one solution at a time and require you to guess. It is kinda annoying because sometime, there are more than one solutions and you have no idea how to guess. I think Ti designers force student to guess so that (they think) we will learn to guess reasonably, not just to obtain the answers. Beside, you have a whole bunch of financial functions which I have never used, let business majors people play with it. The best thing about the Ti84 is its graphing ability. You can find max, min, x-intercept, intersect (2 curves), graph 3D (third party apps).

So if you prefer numerical solving calculator, Ti-84 is a monster.

About the Ti-89:
It is a big WOW to me. In fact, I would say that the 89 offers you better bang for your bucks, just more expensive but much much much more functions than the 84. In fact, it can solve almost all problems in my Math books... However, the best thing about its solving capability is also the worst thing to students. Guess what? You go to school and let this monster "study" for you and you graduate with an empty head. Therefore, it is definitely not a best choice for students. I am a bit sorry that I have purchased the 89 right now. It is always up to you to choose. The 84 is very good choice for students and on the other hand, 89 is harmful to students. In my opinion, the Ti89 is somewhat in between of Computer Math software and a normal graphing Calculator such as the 84. And please keep this in mind: You probably aren't allowed to use the 89 during exams.

I also have heard many good feedback about the Casio graphers too. People said they beat all Ti model from 84 because they are not only cheaper but better design and functionalities than Ti84. Honestly, I don't have Casio graphing Calculator but I have Casio Scientific Calculator since I was in high school. I believe, Ti scientific calc can't compare with those Casio ones. They rocks!!! And I don't work for Ti or Casio.

Conclusion:
I believe for students (Math students) the Ti-84 or a graphing Casio is an excellent choice.
How about advanced Math? Use computer software instead. The 89 extends its solving capabilities closer to computers yet still not there yet.

So A Casio grapher (half price the Ti) and a Math software such as Maple or Maxima (Freeware)... you have optimize your investment.

If you are a high school or college student that is going to take a calculus class, you NEED a TI 89. There is no point in buying a TI 84 , 83, etc. if you intend to take calculus, because you will end up buying a TI 89 anyway.

I like this calculator a lot, it seemed intimidating at first, but if you play around with it for a little bit and have any past experience with graphing calculators it will come easy.

However, I personally prefer the original TI 89 to the TI 89 titanium. In this calculator you have to go back to the "apps" screen if you want to go to the stats list. There are also a lot of applications that you probably will never use and seem incredibly superfluous. I noticed that my battery died in about 4 months, while the batter in the TI 89 (original version) lasted for several years and is yet to die. Finally, the TI 89 titanium is so lacking in color and prettiness in comparison to the TI 89.

So in conclusion, if you intend to be using your calculator as an alarm clock, a phone book, or calendar, and you have a surplus of AAA batteries, then this calculator is the way to go!



Fascinating
It's really amazing, the stuff this can do. This is your best friend if you're an engineer. Does pretty much everything numerical that you'll ever have to do. It takes a while to get used to it, and finding things for the first time can be rather painful, but once you do, it's extremely useful. I bought this to make my life easier on a circuits course I'm taking, and boy, this has REALLY helped. If you dont really need to use most of the features this calculator offers though, it might make sense to go for something else, since this does take a lot of getting used to.




Gift for 14 year old grandson
My grandson who is a freshman in high school was sharing an earlier version with his sister who is a senior. He did not have any trouble switching from the earlier version and is extremely happy with the TI-89 Titanium. I would recomment this for anyone who needs a graphing calculator.


Terrible UI: not for serious users; the entry line is far too small for complex equations.
The interface of customer on this calculating is terrible. The linguette on the advanced part of the screen that you cannot eliminate to take a 15% entire of the vertical exposure (that it considers particularly how much small is)? Good enough for me (too good for my math instructor)
My first calculator in many years. It does a lot, so the learning curve is long, and for me, steep. After about a month, I'm feeling more confident, although there are more than enough options that remain a complete mystery to me (some of this is because the math itself remains a complete mystery to me).

I think it's a little too 'plastic' for the price, and will probably take what I would consider a small bounce and die on me sometime in the future. Hopefully after my two math classes are finished.

In my (college) Trigonometry and Analytic Geometry class the instructor won't let me use it on tests because it is 'too powerful.' Right. But I figure anyone who had actually figured out how to cheat using this calculator probably wouldn't be in this class. In the Calculus I class the instructor has no problem with my calculator. Go figure.

I'm also amazed at how slow it is when it draws a graph. Are the graph drawing brownies inside this thing unionized or something? But we're still only talking about seconds, not minutes, so perhaps it's just that I'm used to instant gratification.

All in all, I'm sorry I had to blow so much money on a calculator, but happy I got this one, even though the instructor thinks it's 'too much power' for me to be trusted with. Hopefully I can work my way up to using it at its highest potential before I spill coffee on it and thus send it to an early grave.

Great calculator. May be a little much if you're not "dabbling" in derivatives. This thing is like a palm pilot on steroids.


Awesome Calculator
I have not had a chance to use some of the functions on this calculator. But, the ones that I have used, make it a superior calculator compared to any others I have ran across. The "pretty print" function allows you to see if you entered the problem correctly, which has caught some of my mistakes.

Ti-89 vs. Ti-89 Titanium
i`m one physical and a student and I of engineering has still used both, the titanium ti89 and ti89 several years and prefeer of mine ti89. The titanium is heavier and the tact and the touch of the keys are very better in the ti89. The only difference between both is the space of disc available, the software and the exposure are exactly the same one and less that you think that you are going to have all the programs and the notes of your entire carrying element you do not need all the space of disc in titanium, the i`ve has not never had problems of the space with the ti89 and has all the programs needs uploaded.


Calculus Useage - High School
Overall, this is a pretty good calculator. However, it should be noted that it does take some time getting used to, especially when switching from a TI-83. The graphs are exceptional and there are many new options. Actually the amount of things it can do is both exhilerating and frustrating at the same time. One negative point is that when you enter in a simple calculation, like 734/87, it will NOT give you the decimal answer and will just leave it in fraction form. I hate that. Therefore, simple calculations are no longer simple on here.


This calculator is a life saver...
This calculating is a life thrifty person. It makes the different calculations a lot easy that using a lot many different constructed in the functions. A problem that specific I have found is that one, even if has option in order to make intergration to times it radrizza and times twisted it, second the complexity of the equation. As an example it has made twisted constantly to integration for the equations of wave of the PDE. Therefore, I have had to make it by hand since I could not say to when it was of right and to when was wrong. But surplus all relative a large calculating.

This calculator is the ultimate for college work. I use all the features constantly in engineering and physics classes alike. One word of caution is that it is really hard to figure out, but once you have all the nuances, the sky is the limit.

Pretty nifty, but also a bit confusing
I am using a TI-83 for the six slid years and when the exposure has stopped to work, I have decided to dawn. I have not used that many different kinds of computers in my life, so as to I we cannot compare this and the relati to you competitors. My main impressions up to now are that it is nearly like a PDA with some of the functions that it has, like the list of to-I give and the clock, so as to was confusionaria to traversare before turns has ignited it. It has taken over a minute to the figure towards the outside like obtaining to the normal screen of the calculating. Just they are not made with the learning curve, since they are not still sure like to use/do a sure number of things (and I sure they are not using it to the relative flood ability), but next to I we do not think that that one the learning curve is the much defective than TI-83 ' s and I completely we preview hardly this calculating to the last one like long. The modification of prices has rendered me the wince, but It is an investment after all, like a calculating or an automobile.

Great calculator...terrible documentation
This calculator is simply brilliant. In my work I have yet to find an integral I could throw at it that trips it up, and the decomposition and factoring capabilities save me a lot of time. The calculator comes with lots of extra programs you can load at your discretion for free.
The biggest problem to me is the documentation. In the days of my youth (stone tablets) software packages came in big boxes with lots of luscious books (sorry, trees). I remember an earlier calculator I got in the 80's that had a great 150 page book called, "Computing with the Scientific Calculator". Now, an infinitely more complex calculator has a manual that's not much bigger and much less helpful. They have lots of info on the accompanying CD, but you've got to go all over the place to get what you need and you've got to read it on a screen rather than a page. In a machine as complicated as this, the documentation is as much of the product as the actual calculator, and TI could do a lot better in this regard.


Great Product but
The same processor that was in my old mac! Powerful and it with my job of the sons can help. I do not know if the 83 make all the risolv and expand the thing that I am trying to convince they in order to use Mathematics on my G5. From my sons it appreciate the push of the key. And yes the schools use the TIs. However, my main claim is the quality of the handbook that has come with the book. What it has come with my old 86 is heads and shoulders over it. Satisfied a kind of moneies that ago for this thing and then it obtains therefore manual nasty, skimpy, often blurry of the 300 pages. Texas Instruments would have to be ashamed! A lot probably all the dirty sense to the bank, dogs. The only good thing is that there is a CD that contains a greater handbook in the shape of the pdf. I do not know why they have not supplied that one and they have not maintained that small nasty on the CD. I do not appreciate to work outside of a screen and use the books in order not to learn give. The OH and mine 86, the cat have decided dargli a test of fall of the latte ones, otherwise. . . And then I have bought the 89 two days ago, I have not known approximately travel 200.

Texas TI-89 Titanium
I purchased this item a couple of weeks ago. I own a TI-84 Plus Silver Edition and thought I would upgrade to the TI-89 Titanium for the additional calculus features. I was disappointed when I received the calculator. The reasons are the display and the input notations on the face-plate. It you are familiar with the TI-84 you will note that the display is crisp and easy to read. The lite grey color of its face-plate combined with the color choices for notations makes it easy to read. This cannot be said of the TI-89 Titanium. The dark grey face-plate with the use of washed-out blue and cream-yellow colors makes it difficult to read the subscript key notations. Worse, the height of the keys themselves cast a shadow over the notations. The display is dark and recessed appoximately 1cm below the face-plate. This is important to note because the rim of the recess casts a shadow onto the display. Since the diplay is dark to begin with, and the font size is small you squint to read the function menu choices that lie right where the shadow falls. Why they (Texas Instuments) did not use a display similar to the TI-84 I do no know. The calculator itself is powerful. It handles number crunching and symbolic notation easily, but you still need to be able to read its output. It is like Texas Instruments designed a car with very strong chassis and powerful engine, then covered it with a Ford Fiesta body and a cracked windshield. I would strongly recommend that if you do not absolutely need caculus functions you look at the TI-84. Altrenatively, look at the HP-50g if calculus functions are necessary.


Excellent calculator
This is one of the best and easiest calculator I've ever used.
I started using a Casio, but this beats it in every way, easier, and far more powerful.
Most of my classmates use this or the Voyage and some say it's given them some great advantage in calculus and physics, even upped the score for some.


Top of the line for almost everyone
Titanium TI-89 replaces my TI-83. Some people have said if not been going to take the calculation then not taken care to obtain the TI-89 because more she is complicated. They are not of agreement. I have had more than less than a day and without to read the handbook, have made the stats 1-var, I have taken ennesima to the feeding of the root, resolved an equation and have made a factorial one. Task that is from the point of view works them enough intuitiva and a great improvement. To a sure point, I will take the Calc and over, so as to I will not have to learn a new calculating at the same time. The following consideration then has cost, but in the long term, not task some Marches of bucks those a lot of one difference. Probably you will have this calculating in order around 8-10 years, or more long. I am striking outside of one star however for the poor one chosen in order smarrir from an interface of high contrast to one clear font colorful on low priority colored light. Sure, it is graceful and it polishes, but I have poor vision to begin with and one must strain an anchor little in order to find that what is trying. Initially, to really they are felt evil me from the effort of the eye. I would love to see one light bulb, a control of dimension, a better contrast key and a vertical coil for the box it of the number entrance. These improvements have been able to guarantee one screen slighly greater and one greater battery of lithium like the PDA supports. From the point of view it works them however, task that large and is suggested. Not task that the learning curve is qualche.cosa to be discouraged approximately.

It does everything I need and more. Extremely easy to use, I hardly ever change the batteries, and for most computations, very very quick.


Very Good product - But Expensive
The product is very good.
Monopolized by TI and the School system and standardized test. Around $100 more u can get a computer so I cannot see why not use a sony or some other company's product. I used Sony for my BS [Engineering] and MS [Engineering] and it worked perfectly well.

A Must For the Engineer!
The question becomes as simple as: do you expect to take higher level calculus, linear modeling/algebra, differential equations and/or electric circuits? If the answer is yes, you want to buy this calculator. I initially purchased the Casico 750 (a bit better than the TI 83) and now I find myself (in the middle of my second year of my engineering degree) finally breaking down to buy the TI 89 instead. Other reviews point to why this calculator stands out from the rest, all I wish to add is: avoid purchasing something cheaper for the engineer, you may only regret it later (like I did).


Worth the extra money
I have obtained this calculating after that gave to my sister my old TI-83 silver edition. They are a electrical engineering student and the characteristics of EE for tension and other things come in practical graceful. I more use the calculating in the equations it differentiates them and it is much profit. That is the much graceful calculating that standard you will wish for all the course of for the mathematics over the sequences and the series. It does good the relative job.

I have bought the calculating for my son who assists to the High School. Texas Instruments TI-89
This calculating is impressive for the fact that will make the sense more than the greater part of people never it will have need of. Downside it is only that relative the really hard one to outside calculate it all without sure species of teaching.


Can't go wrong with the TI 89 Titanium
This calculator has a powerful computer algebra system (CAS) and plenty of storage space for extra programs and data. If you're looking for an advanced graphing calculator to do some quick and dirty graphing or some relatively advanced math, you should consider this model as a contender. The construction is relatively solid although all the newer calculators don't feel as sturdy as the older models do (ie. TI-85, HP-48g, etc..). The TI connect software supports windows and mac but not linux so think about this before you buy. The USB port makes transferring programs from the computer easy and the display has high resolution (100x160). The keys are shaped weirdly but they're not too shabby. The manual is horrible so you should find a tutorial to help with the learning curve. Also consider the TI-86 and the HP-50g as they are both excellent calculators and are probably easier to learn to use.


TI-89 Titanium For Statistics
Pros:
- The display has a Pretty Print option (default), which is very helpful when inputting long formulas.
- Great for Statistics, which is why I bought it in the first place since that is my major in college.

Cons:
- This is important if you are a college student. The math and statistics books all refer to the TI-83 when explaining how to perform the calculations using a calculator. So while the teacher is talking out loud walking the students step by step on how to perform a calculation, you're sitting there with the most powerful calculator in the class and out of luck. Then you have to scramble flipping thru the menu items to match the menu path of the TI-83, AND you're trying to learn the math at the same time. That happened to me in a statistics class and that wasn't fun at all! So be prepared for the inevitable; this is your warning. I recommend you study the upcoming textbook chapter ahead of time and learn how to perform those functions before you get to class.
- PDF files exist to explain the Flash applications loaded on the TI-89 Titanium. Unfortunately they are not easily found on the TI website. To get the PDF's, you have to follow the menu path as if you want to download the application. Then on the web page where you download the application, the PDF is there. TI should have also have placed the PDF in the "Documentation" section of the website. If I had not updated the application, I would not have known the PDF existed. Make sure you download the PDF for the TI-89 Titanium, not the PDF for the TI-89. Some functions are different. For statistics, be sure to download the PDF "Statistics with List Editor Guidebook For TI-89".

General:
- I did the Operating System upgrade, but with a few bumps along the way. For example, I have Windows XP Pro SP2 on my PC and it doesn't recognize the driver when plugging in the USB cable. TI knows this and is part of the calculator-to-PC connection instructions on their website. So you'll have to uninstall the driver and then let Windows search for a driver. Eventually Windows found it but I got a horrific message saying the "Microsoft strongly recommends you backup before installing..." In fact, Windows set a System Restore point before installing the driver. The driver worked but why can't TI certify that driver with Microsoft so that message will not scare the heck out of the average user?
- Make sure you register before beginning the OS upgrade. You need to register to get any of the downloads, so do it as soon as you get the calculator.
- You'll notice that the dates listed in the "About..." menu in some of the Flash applications are almost the same as the dates listed on the TI website. Don't bother to download those because the applications are the same version. Don't know why TI lists a different date on the web page from the date displayed in the "About..." menu in some of the applications.

After the years of appreciation of the well planned TI-83, I was spiacente to sell mines and to buy a TI-89 for the calculation. A Very Efficient and Helpful Calcalator!!!
The speed distortion, that TI-89 Calcalator is a large calculating. They are currently matriculations and I have found this useful calculating for the rest of my life. With this calculating, you will succeed with the course is left over to you comprised the calculation of AP, statistics of AP, physics of AP and engineering. Everything the TI-83 SHOULD have been
Hmmm... my previous review seemed to be a piece of feedback I wished to leave for a seller (new to amazon, experienced on eBay). So, here are my thoughts on the '89.

I upgraded from a TI-84 plus, so I will be comparing the two sometimes (not very fair, huh?) I'll use the terms "TI-84" and "TI-83" more or less interchangeably since they are the same platform, different hardware.

This is everything that the TI-83 SHOULD have been. I can actually scroll through my calculation history now! Woohoo!

On a more serious note, the Computer Algebra System (CAS) on this thing is killer. Math class (in this case, Algebra II and Pre-cal) just got a whole lot easier. I can type in any equation and solve it (and NO, I don't have to set the equation = 0, live with just one possible solution when there are many, or get a "non-real answer" error like I did on the TI-84). It also has "expand" functions - let you expand a polynomial (VERY useful - no more using gobs of paper and time to simplify (x^3+5x^2+56x+89)^50 anymore.

It also lets me factor any expression, simplify square roots, and display problems in pretty print, all things I SHOULD have been able to do on the '83, but couldn't.

The more I use this, the more I realize that this is the real deal - not some slow, low-res, crippled device made for elementary and middle school (Like the '83). Oh, did I mention it can do 3D graphing?

After using the 89, I would never Never NEVER go back to using an 83.


Nice start, still a ways to go
I have given from then "an appraisal of product" of 3 stars even if the product is excellent, it has a sense to go also. Typically, when someone test to use my calculating, he/she says that it is too much hard. Initially I have had that the opinion equally but the calculating is being developed on me. However, the GUI more thinks a lot clunky confronted to my TI84. They would have assigned to the TI89 the 4 if my TI84 were pleasant how much more which it has easy to read the fonts and the key identifies like pure easier navigation. Perhaps in order to obtain the five, that one would mean one screen a po' larger with little keys. I have appreciate the sense that my TI-85 has worked: it has listed to the functions long the inferior part of the relative screen (soft keys). An other thing that would have pushed it towards the five would be graphical in-line or at least the ability to the keys in-line that I could release in order to recall previously has generated the diagrams -- something more as it derives.

Excellent Calculator for the money
This calculator is great, not only does it have the power to graph up to 99 2 dimensional functions, but also has the capabilities to graph one 3 dimensional function. It has many functions that make classes such as physics and calculus a lot easier. I wouldn't recommend this calculator to anyone who doesn't need all the extra bells and whistles. It takes a lot less steps to do many things on a TI-84 or an 83 than on the TI-89. So far I have no complaints and am really happy with the upgrade from the 83 to the 89. It is everything you could expect from Texas Instruments.


Awesome calculator but quite complicated at times
the reason i gave this calculator a 4 out 5 is because even though this calculator will do absolutely anything you want it to do, it is because it took me a while to get used to how the keys were position and also the 300 page book that comes with it does not do it justice ou should really download the one on the cd. also putting the games and other things is kind of taking sometime for me to figure out but i only tried it ocne so im sure ill get the hang of it soon. but i would defenitely recommend this to anyone. just to dont get it the day before the SAT and expect a miracle because you will not get it. the calculator will do anything btu you have to know how to input it. definately BUY IT


THE TRUTH
ah kay, now im gonna tell you the truth from a 4+ year ti-89 user. Let me tell u something i used that baby for nearly everything. Unfortunately it was stolen at school last month. This is where the titanium comes in. First let me tell you a little about the 89's in general, then I'l get to the new features. First of all, I'l admit it, the TI-89 IS a little complicated. It takes a while to get used to. Especially if you use an 83/84. My school lent out an 84 plus to me, and I think it's honestly crap. anyways back to the 89. The main thing many will notice(this is a preset option on the titanium, is that the apps are organized into a desktop. The home screen is where the classic calculator functionality comes in. Some find this annoying, others like it this way. My solution: just press the mode button and turn off apps desktop. This way it starts out as at calculator mode. All of your apps come as a drop down menu when u press the apps button. About the home screen. This calculator is a beatiful thing. First of all, all previous calculations are able to be called back. Up to 99 calculations. What happens is there on the home screen there is a bar where you enter the problem, and the area above is used to display the previous problems. What is really good is that you can just press up and you will go back to the history and can pick out the number from there. Next we get to menus. As you have probably noticed the Y=, graph, table, etc. buttons up top have been replaced with f1-f8(f6,7,8 are available by pressing the second key) These are used for drop-down menus that show up in the calculator. Next we come to the actual graphing functions that have been replaced by f1 and such. Relax people, just press diamond then the function number to use it. Don't worry, they are all listed. Now there are four modifiers, diamond is almost the same thing as second. alpha is for letters and some symbols. the ^ arrow (up) is for captial letters and for the cut/copy/paste feature. Yes there is a copy/paste feature in the 89, its very useful. you just hold down arrow and move with the keys to highlight stuff. and then just press cut, copy, or paste. One more thing, for calculator management, instead of the memory button. You would go to Var-link instead. This manages files, links to other calculators, etc. 3D graphing is a good feature as well. As I'm only in precal and mag physics i havent really had much use for it yet, but I've had a lot of fun with it. The preloaded apps are most useful, but if you don't need it, don't use it because some are specialised and hard to understand unless you know what to do.

Now some people have had problems with it, here's some of the main ones that people say are bad
1) the screen contrast is bad
2) you can't see from an angle
3) it's hard to see the keys(including the modifier labels above them)
4) the font is too small
5) it's too complicated
6) the manuel doesn't explain much
7) the case is too tight

Now come my answers
None of these are true except for the last one by the way

1)the contrast is perfectly fine, personally i think it's pretty hard to confuse the black text with the background of the screen
2)you can see perfectly fine from an angle
3)Now this i don't understand, the keyboard is set on a greyish brownish surface. the modifier labels above the keys are written in light blue for the 2nd key, bright green for the diamond key, and white for the alpha key. I don't see how this is hard
4)the font may be smaller, but is perfectly visible. Also, the resolution is so good that even though the font is smaller than the 84, it's much clearer.
5) It may be slightly complicated but after a little while you will understand everything necessary.
6) yes this is unfortunatly true, the manuel doesn't let on much. My advice is go to a ti community and ask for help in forums. One of the best is ticalc.org, it also has archives for free apps, programs, and games.(these archives are huge)
7) I'm sorry but a monkey could figure this out. All you need to do is push the calculator out of the case from the butt of it. just push out, there is a slight dent in the cover for that reason

The only calculator you'll ever need in your life
I was debating if to obtain Ti-84 more or the titanium Ti-89. The greater part of you is probably in the same situation. Naturally, with Ti-89 the titanium is it more moneies, but the additional characteristics include one greater resolution, more RAM and ROM and much more. I have decided to obtain titanium Ti-89 -- and not if the sorrow at all. That is one feeding house. The calculation question inserts all, it will give the answer to you. Moreover the points on like resolving it will show you. That is large for the AP calculation. It is allowed not only, but it gives an advantage over other computers. It is worthy the $20 additional ones in order to buy this. If you are in engineering or for the mathematics, it is to must. Against that popola it sees: - the contrast screen low: I will admit confronting the other computers, it are lower. However the difference is least. It has not importunato it never at all. - the colors on the keys: You can see them very well. I have not had they never a problem with. You rammaricherete not to buy this.


Great calculator, with flaws
Don't worry, it isn't going to make your head explode or anything, but anyway, I am in double-advanced math (i'm a seventh grader who's in algebra 1) and I decided that, what the heck, I want a graphing calculator (there is a very long story involved in this, very long indeed....) and I was originally going to get a TI-84 plus SE. After informing my algebra teacher of this, he told me to get a TI-89, because it would take me much farther than the 84. Well, after shopping around I found one at a resonable price. After recieving it in the mail, I started toying around with it. I found it much, much more usefull than the 83's my school has, but there are a few bizare problems. First off, for some reason, It won't graph inequalities (it should be able too, but it won't for some reason) it also requires the use of the numeric solver for basic math. other than that, this calculator is great, and is the perfect tool for anyone in math. (just don't graph random things during algebra, i can no longer bring it to school >_<)

Good but very difficult
After having my TI-83 for a couple of years and abusing it badly the buttons quit working. I consulted my AP Calculus teacher, she told me to get a new one, and I had friends that had the TI-89 and told me to get it as a replacement (knowing that I wanted to go into engineering). I received a couple of days after the order (3 days before my SAT). Many basic things on the TI-83 become difficult on the TI-89 such as lists and matrixes. I figured it out to help me on the SAT and it helps a lot in my AP Calculus even though my teacher does not really like for having it because it can do all of my homework problems for me.

Great calculator great price
Very powerful processor with programming capabilities and all the functions I could think of. I'm a TI-83 Silver Edition user, bu the TI-89 has many more features and is worth the differnce in price. It was purchased because my sons univeristy class required it above the ti-83.


Great product, but can be complicated
I have modernized to the TI-89 from mine 10 years TI-82. The difference is narcotic and still I am calculating towards the outside a lot the characteristics. Use this for my code advanced category of calculation and the tools of Calc on it has been extremely useful. I am waiting for with eagerness to verify the functions financial institutions. Available one in the handbook and is aid much, but some things that were easy on the TI-82 more are complicated on this calculating - like being converted from the fractions in it decimates them. In a generalized manner a lot is impressed with all that this calculating can make.

Perfect for the Self-learner
I am currently studying Calculus on my own-yes, for fun-and I am not that good at basic algebra. All the hard stuff is easy for me,
but the algebra is really what I am studying, just in the form of calculus.
This calculator is perfect for just checking your answers on algebra homework.
If you need it for future classes, and you already know how to use it, you are that much farther ahead than anybody else!


It does have its drawbacks-you do have to take lessons from somebody with a clue on how to do basic things
as well as the difficult stuff-like how to get to the calculator part of it and solve a basic algebra problem-like this:
solve(0=2x-((x^2+1)^(1/2)),x)
When you put exactly that in the calculator, it solves for x, and you don't have to do it by hand.
It answers with 3^(1/2)/3 by the way.
But you have to know that in order to do square root, you have to put the number to the half power(as shown above).
It does get complicated, but it's fun! :) Highly recommended.

Good but a little cluttered
The only two downsides to this calculator are that the sub-programs can be a little irritating at first due to their cluttered arrangements and that the user manuals, as with any good piece of technical equipment, are cryptic to the point of being almost unuseable. Despite these drawbacks, this calculator is still a great purchase, really a must buy if you both appriciate this type of calculator (not VPR) and are going to be doing any advanced math or science.


Excellent device
I've only been using it a couple weeks now, but this calculator is absolutely excellent. I have no complaints whatsoever. It seems rugged, it is pretty easy to learn to use and it from what I can tell it will be sufficient for all my engineering classes at college. I couldn't ask for any more.


Good if you need it but most don't
If been taking engineering, statistics, or it finances this will be much practical one, but if you can close obtain with something less, it tries to until that YOU not shelters this. very capable tool
Got this for my son's freshman year. College recommended TI83+, thought I might as well upgrade for just a few bucks more. Guess what; prof. said that version was not allowed. Guess it did too much of the work for the student. Could see that for high school, but college? My son now has the 83+.


Just a few things... (updated review)
The things preventing me from giving this a 5 is these:

- The text in display is too small, I would like it as big is on the ti-83 calc.

- When you turn it on, the screen doesnt pop up immidiantely, it takes ~2 sek, leaving an unsatisfied feeling.

- The cover is opened in the wrong direction, its more imortant to protect the screen side than the button side.

Otherwise, it is a good flashy little toy that makes all the regular ti83 owners go: "Oh, cool, what is that?" =)


Powerful Calculator; Highly Recommend
Great Aspects:

With tons of RAM and powerful functions/calculations, this calculator can't be beat; think of it as a really souped-up TI-83 Plus. It is also very easy to edit/re-use past calculations. The ability to hook up to a PC via the provided USB cable and software can prove to be very useful as well as the ability hook up with other TI-89's (again, the cable is provided). Anybody taking calculus or a subsequent course should strongly consider this calculator (especially if you're in the later courses).

While not really relating to school or math, this calculator is capable of running some really cool games.

Downside:

It takes time to learn how to use all of its programs and functions. Sometimes, you have to go through some pretty complicated processes to do some fairly basic functions. Don't throw away your manual. Buttons are on the small side and it is sometimes hard to read buttons (especially the alternate, "2nd," button functions). If you're not taking calculus or a higher-level course, you don't need this calculator, particularly since it's not cheap.

Summary:

The TI-89 Titantium is an exceptionally useful tool for those entering math/science fields, starting with calculus. For those who just take math courses because they have to (for graduation requirements), this calculator isn't worth the investment.

Very good, but not very user friendly
This machine is better of relative YOU 89 of the predecessore, because more it has constructed in the functions. But there is a common defect of all YOU 89 computers, is customer unfriendly.


Very good for Statistics and Finance too...
I saw many reviewers for advanced math and engineering. I just want to add that it is also very good for stat and finance. It can be calculated with almost (I'm saying this because I haven't tried every single one yet ;-) every calculation with this TI-89. The plus side is that it has bigger screen and we can change any value anytime without starting over... especially good for multiple problems solving.

At first, I intendeded to purchase TI-BAII+ required by the professor but decided to trade this TI-89 Titanium with my old original TI-89. Both have flash applications for Statistics with List Editor and Finance as well as Data/Metrix Editor. For finance, you can get PV, FV, i, PMT, NPV, IRR, etc.

You can also download guide books from TI's website. This is a life saver for most business classes.... I used TI-89 from advanced algebra, pre- and calculus, fin & managerial accounting, economics, 2 statistics, and financial management... 10 courses altogether ;-) And this IT-89 costs about the same price of a business text book! Of course, you'll need to know the concepts and how to use this calculator first.

If you're wondering which one to choose between original TI89 and this new Titanium, I recommend original if you've vision problem. Original TI89 has deep purple and dark blue colors for "2nd" and "diamond" keys. This new one has very pale blue and light green keys, hard to look at if you need combination keys. SO do for "the fonts" and "alpha" key. As the manufacturer mentioned, this one has more memory and can be used USB cable.

Just a tip for the two reviewers below and others about fraction and decimal switching (.25 - 1/4 switching) :

Just use a "period" between the calculation (if you have all whole numbers) and you'll see decimals in the result without changing the "mode" you preferred. If you have any decimals between the calculations, you'll automatically see decimals. It works for every graphing calculator. I got that tip from a Math Lab Asst. in my algebra lab.

This calculating seems to do good all and it. Mine only claim is that the functions of alternated key are in some way hard to read and the screen can be in some hard way to indicate. Tig Class
This Calculator is perfect for advanced math classes. It does more than I could ever believe. The Calculator is simple to use and has a nice screen format. The main problem is that it has so much processes that you actually have to dig got the x radical sign. It can even graph in 3-d. The only thing better is one that has a colored screen.

TI's most powerful graphing handheld to date! Must have for serious college students. Being a computer science student unfortunately I have a ton of upper level math classes I have to get thru, including 4 Calculus & 3 Physics courses. Most of my classes (starting at college algebra) require a graphing calculator so the cheap scientific calculators do me no good. I looked at the TI-84 Plus Silver ed. but decided on the 89 titanium instead. I like the fact it includes 16 apps and finally comes with the USB cable needed to add more if desired. This is also an approved tool for a number of college board tests/exams. The only con to me is it's overpriced tag. You can buy optional colored faceplates and zip cases for it also. Now you're playing w/ power!

A great calculator though still some flaws
The TI-89 titanium is a very good calculator.
I also own a HP-49G and the TI is way better; the interface is so well defined... it's almost as a desktop.
Compare that to the HP-49G... it's like the command-line interface!
There are a couple of but's though:
First of all, the "2nd" labels on top of the keys are in a soft blue, almost unreadable. This is a very big design flaw.
Second, I don't like the screen a lot. Sure, it's large. Sure, you can set contrast. But if you are looking at it from an angle, it stinks. You can't set high contrast when looking it from an angle, as it just makes things worse. And believe me: if you work with an calculator, nine out of ten times you will be looking at the screen from an angle.
Lastly, why does TI refuse to put in a proper equation editor? The HP has one, and I find it personally very helpfull.
Sure, you can buy an add-on for $15 from TI. And yes, there are freeware equation writers too. So why not give it away then?
Concluding: don't get me wrong. This calculator is a very good performer, and I think the best that money can buy. Just wish they would have made it perfect...

The extra $$ is worth it.
I have used many computers in the past, but titanium TI-89 is never the better thing. The words are not hard to read at all, poichè some would believe and the symbolic manipulations are right as magic. Like a student who is making a step in 2 algebra and preparation to rifinire BC on the calculation of AP, calculation III, the equations differentiates them, on linear algebra and on statistics of AP, all otherwise who it has been in my situation has bought a TI-89, or a similar calculating with the CAS. This calculating is good worthy $20 more than the TI-84 more the silver edition, since the frontal slabs interchangeble really do not make appeal me and I really they have need of some symbolic characteristics of manipulation to help them during algebra II and all i others course.


Cannot see
I just got my TI-89 Titanium and it is a fine machine as you would expect with one exception. The blue lettering on the metallic background makes the characters almost impossible to read. This is very frustrating when you frequently need those functions. If you look at the older TI-86 the characters are bright yellow or blue over black and are easy to see. This may seem a bit picky but being able to see what you need is critical. I think we have reached the ridiculous point where style is getting in the way of utility. How in the world did this problem get past everyone? Anyway it is a great calculator but always carry a magifying glass strapped to it's back.

After taking calculus and learning about limits, derivatives, integrals, infinite series, Taylor series, differential equations, and multivariable functions, I decided that I would look for a calculator which was capable of symbolic computation. After analyzing my options, I decided on a TI-89 Titanium. The TI-89 Titanium is able to expand polynomials, factor polynomials, and do all of the calculus techniques that I mentioned -- symbolically and numerically. One of the other things I found helpful was the TI-89 Titanium's ability to plot direction fields using different algorithms (including Euler's method). One of the nicer things about this model (compared to the TI-89) is that it has USB connectivity (cord included) for installing applications and transferring data. Another nice thing is that it also supports connectivity to older model TI-89s via the old I/O port which is right next to the USB connector. I also found the "exact mode" very useful (exact mode will give you exact answers rather than decimal approximations). Yet, the most useful feature of this calculator is probably the "pretty print" feature which displays expressions as you would normally write them on paper. This feature allows you to easily see the expression that you typed in. All these features plus copy and paste ability make this calculator nearly perfect. My only complaint is that the cover does not initially slide on and off easily. However, I'm sure that with more use it will wear in. Overall this is a great calculator -- I recommend it
